Print size

QR minimum X-dimension is 0.396 mm. Target is 0.495 mm. Maximum is 0.990 mm. Quiet zone is 4 modules on every side. The exact sizes for your code appear when you enter a GTIN.

EAN-13 nominal size is 37.29 × 25.93 mm at 100%. Magnification is 80–200%.

How the link works

A GS1 Digital Link is an ordinary web address with a fixed shape. A till reads the GTIN out of it. A phone opens it.

Domain: The resolver. GS1's is the default. A brand can use its own https domain.
/01/: Application identifier 01: a GTIN follows.
GTIN: Your GTIN, padded to 14 digits with leading zeros.
/10/: Optional batch or lot. Serial uses /21/.
?17=: Optional expiry date as YYMMDD. Best before uses 15.

Will EAN-13 stop working?

No. Print the linear barcode and the QR code together during the transition.

Do I need a new GTIN?

No. The QR code carries the GTIN you already have, padded to 14 digits in the link.

Can I use any QR code?

No. Retail uses a GS1 Digital Link, which is a QR code of a specific URI. A QR code of an ordinary product page is not that.

What is a resolver?

The domain in the link. The default on this page is https://id.gs1.org. A brand can use its own https domain.

When do I use GS1 DataMatrix?

Use it when a trading partner asks for an element string, which is common in healthcare and fresh food. The element string appears under the link, and signed-in users can download the GS1 DataMatrix. Retail checkout uses the QR code.
